The Hardest Day Yet

Being an immigrant comes with a lot of challenges, but I feel like up until today I had taken those challenges well in stride. However, no matter how much research or speaking with other expats here in Cuenca I did, I was not prepared for today.

Today I sent my two year old to her first day of school in Ecuador. Her first day of school in Spanish. Her first day away from me and my husband in five months. Her first day “alone” in a new country.

I was a worried wreck last night and barely slept. Then I kept bursting into tears this morning. Then when she went into her classroom and burst into tears, I had to fight my own to make her new school a happy and positive experience for her.

Ultimately, the day turned out great. The staff member at the gate let me know that Eleanor had a wonderful day. Even better than that, Eleanor told me she made friends! I was so relieved that she had a good day and connected with the other children. I am much more at ease sending her going forward.

Sometimes our most difficult moments can have the best outcomes.
